A Book Dealers Diary.
21.12.09
My sincere apologies for not keeping the diary up to
date. As you can probably imagine the last couple of weeks have been extremely busy. We now have snow and ice all
over the roads and pavements of Lowestoft, so as the song says it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Hope you
all have a lovely festive holiday, and I look forward to updating my diary once again in 2010. Bye for now. Gary
07.12.09
I have been incredibly
busy processing orders and packing up books over the last week. A great big thank you to all my customers. Things should begin
to slow down a little from now on as the Christmas rush starts to wind down. If I have any special offers I often post
the information on my Twitter Page, I also talk some complete nonsense on there, so you could always join in the conversation. If you do get the time
visit my page and click on the Follow link and you can be sure not to miss any bargains. If I don't get a chance
to update my diary again before Christmas, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my loyal customers a great Christmas,
and a peaceful New Year.
01.12.09
December 1st already,
where the hell as this year gone to. I have been very busy with book sales over last few weeks, but today has slowed down,
so I think the Christmas rush might be coming to an end. I have just posted the first part of a short story
I am attempting to write, you can read it HERE. I will be adding more as soon as I write it. Bye for now
27.11.09
The weather this morning in Lowestoft
is wonderful. Bright sunshine, and chilly, the perfect winters morning. Yesterday I collected a large quantity of old books
from a house clearance, so I'll now be busy listing these books into my Abebooks Inventory. So far the most interesting title I have found in the dozens of boxes I have collected is "The Marine Chronometer,
Its History and Development" by Lt.-Commander Rupert T. Gould. Still plenty of boxes to open, so I must get back to work.
20.11.09
I've been
very busy promoting this website over the last couple of weeks, and as you would no doubt have noticed I have been neglecting
the Book Dealers Diary. One of my promotion ideas has been to make short films of my local area, and of anything else that
pops into my head, and post them on Youtube. I can say without fear of contradiction that none of these films will be
receiving an Oscar nomination any time soon. You can view my films HERE Today I will be continuing to list books to our Inventory at Abebooks. You can now follow me on Twitter. I don't really understand the concept of Twitter but that's probably because I'm too old, or too stupid. The weather here in North Lowestoft this morning is overcast with just some light rain. Bye for now.
03.11.09
A blustery damp
morning here in "Sunny Lowestoft". Book sales have been holding up pretty well during the Postal dispute, so this
morning will be spent packing up my orders. This afternoon I will be listing some more of our collection of John
O'London's Weekly issues which unsurprisingly have been our biggest sellers over the last few months. You can
now follow me on TWITTER where I like to talk about books, or anything else that pops into my head.
30.10.09
The day began with lovely sunny skies but
has now turned rather overcast here in Lowestoft. I have spent most of the day reading stories from our collection of John
O'London's Weekly issues when I should have been listing them for sale. I'm now going for a long walk on the beach
in front of my house.
29.10.09
Glorious morning
here in "Sunny Lowestoft." Blue skies and a very light warm breeze. Very strange weather we are having as we near
November. Yesterday I went along the coast to Gorleston where families were playing on the beach just like it was a summer
holiday. Children were even swimming in the North Sea. We now have three poems entered for our Twitter Poetry Competition, remember there is still plenty of time to enter, so get your poetry head in gear and start to write. I'm spending today
listing more of our wonderful John O'London's Weekly issues. They seem to be taking me longer to list than most because
I keep stopping to read them. Right I must get on. Bye for now.
27.10.09
Once again it's a damp and drizzly start
to the day here in "Sunny Lowestoft" by the sea. I'm taking a day off from book listing and going for a
long walk along the coast towards Southwold. I'll probably end up at a place called Benacre which is a beautiful spot near
Covehithe. If the day brightens up I will take some photographs and post them in here.
21.10.09
It's a damp overcast day here in sunny Lowestoft
by the sea. As I write this there has still not been any definite decision regarding the postal stike here in the UK. The
strike supposed to be starting tomorrow and lasting for 48 hours which if they do go ahead will obviously cause a fair amount
of disruption. As soon as the talks between the Royal Mail management and the unions have concluded, I will post the outcome
of those talks in here. I have now opened up a page dedicated to self-published authors and small indepenent publishing
houses. If you are one of these please feel free to contact me with your details and I will place any information about
your projects on this dedicated page. UPDATE: The postal strike has now been confirmed.
It will start tomorrow morning and last for 48 hours.
20.10.09
NEW
FREE BOOKSELLING SERVICE
I have just begun to offer a new service on "Look 4 Books"
for people who are looking to sell some of their unwanted books. This is a Totally FREE Service. All you have to do is
send me a list of the books you wish to sell, and I will place that list along with your contact email address on this
site so that you can negotiate the price you want with the customer. I will play no part in the sale. When you
send the list please remember to put both the title, and the author of the book. You can send your list to gary@look4books.co.uk
16.10.09
The UK national postal strike will take
place on the 22nd and 23rd of October. It will probably take around a week after these strikes for the postal service to get
back to anything like normal operations. So please be aware that your orders will possibly take considerably longer to
arrive. Because of this disruption we are offering a 20% discount on all purchases you make from our Abebooks Inventory during the rest of October, and the whole of November when you buy the title you want direct from us here at "Look4Books".
All you have to do is search our Abebooks Inventory, find the title you want, then Contact Us here with the name of the book you would like to buy and we will send you a Paypal invoice with the 20% Discount included.
During the same period we are also offering a 20% Discount on all our John O'London's Weekly issues we have for
sale at www.look4books.co.uk .
12.10.09
As you may or may not realise there is the distinct
possibility of a National Postal strike here in the UK coming up in the next week or so. Details of this proposed industrial
action is still quite sketchy, but as soon as there are any definite dates agreed by the union involved I will post them in
here.
10.10.09
I have just begun
to list our "John O'London's Weekly" issues for sale direct from this site, I will be concentrating
on adding many more issues for sale over the coming days. You can purchase these via the Paypal button to the
left of the item description. You can view the issues listed so far by Clicking Here. We are offering Free Shipping on these publication to anywhere within the UK.
06.10.09
Pouring
down with rain today here in Sunny Lowestoft. An English seaside town when it's grey and raining can be a rather depressing
place to visit, so just spare a thought for the people that live there. Over the next couple of days I
will be concentrating on selling a lot of my newer stock in bulk to the trade, but I will find time to begin listing
some of our more interesting titles to our inventory by the end of the week.
30.09.09
A dull and overcast day here in Lowestoft, I've
been busy over the last few days selling some of my general stock to the trade. I'm now back concentrating on listing
some of our more interesting titles on to Abebooks. My best find last week was a beautiful selection of Talwin Morris designed
poetry books. You can see a photograph of one of the titles on the homepage. If you're interested in any of the books
we have for sale please don't hesitate to contact me.
23.09.09
I had another large
quantity of old books delivered yesterday so I will be spending most of today adding these to my Abebooks inventory. I
still haven't had time as yet to list all the John O'London issues I have, sadly customers are buying them faster
than I can list them. So I think the easiest thing is to just say that I have most of the issues from 1920 right through to
when they stopped in 1958, and I even have the few rare copies from 1960 when they made a brief relaunch. So if you're
after a particular edition please just get in touch via the Contact Page.
17.09.09
I must start
by apologising for not getting our full list of "John O'London's Weekly" issues up online. A few of you
have been rightly pestering me about this and I promise I will have it done by the start of next week. I'm now taking
a short break from listing any new book titles to our Abebooks Inventory as I'm busy with other things. I should start listing again by the middle of next week.
14.09.09
I had a pretty
lazy weekend, but still picked up a few new books from a customer on Sunday morning. One of the books was a copy of "More
Devil's Kisses" edited by Linda Lovecraft. This is an anthology of horror stories with an erotic edge. Published
by Corgi the ISBN number they have assigned to this title can give the impression that this is a Children's Corgi edition.
This could not be further from the truth as this is a book strictly for adults only. So if you do use ISBN numbers to search
for books be aware that they can be misleading. Remember there are a number of megalister book sellers on Abe and Amazon who
only ever use ISBN look up to fill their description boxes on these sites, so any customer viewing their books will on occasion
be seeing completely the wrong information about a particular title they were searching for. So be careful, your 13
year old son might be very happy to recieve a copy of "More Devil's Kisses" but I'm sure most parents
wouldn't be to happy having bought it for him because a bookseller was too lazy to actually look at the book they are
selling.
11.09.09
Beautiful morning here on the glorious East
Coast of England. I've just been informed by a friend of mine that I'm possibly the most easterly bookseller in the
United Kingdom. Not too sure if this gives me any advantage over less easterly booksellers, but I suppose I could add it to
my stationary. "The Most Easterly Bookseller In The United Kingdom" Right I'm now off to my printers, I wonder if they're The Most Easterly Printers in the United Kingdom?
Edit: A customer has just told me that I'm not "The Most Easterly Bookseller In The United Kingdom".
So it's a good job I hadn't got my stationary changed. He thinks I might be "The Most Easterly Bookseller In
England", I suppose that's better than nothing.

09.09.09
Today has been spent once again scanning covers
of books. Picking up tiny elastic bands and placing them in a tin would be more exciting than this. I have someone else cataloguing
our huge collection of John O'London's Weekly issues which going by their laughter from the other office is apparantly
more interesting than what I'm doing. Right is a scan I've just done of one of the illustrations from the front
cover of a very late edition of these publications which is featuring the new phenomenon of the Paperback. It has four made
up paperback covers of classic novels, they're very amusing, this one is the least risque. Click on the image to see a larger view.

I went swimming today in the freezing cold North
Sea which is just a few yards from my front door for the first, and last time this year. See a picture of me to the right trying
to look brave. I've spent the rest of today thawing out. The sales direct from "Look 4 Books" are steadlily
increasing which is nice. I will continue with my special offers over the coming months, not sure myself yet what next months
will be but I'll think of something.

05.09.09
One of
my favourite novelists, and newspaper columnists Keith Waterhouse died yesterday. A hard drinking old school Fleet Street
reporter with a wicked wit, and a great eye for the issues that really mattered to the working man. You can read his
BBC obituary HERE.
04.09.09
There
has been a long running argument in the book selling world about what constitutes a true first edition. There are a great
deal of sellers who believe they are correct in listing a book for sale as a first edition even if the book is a later
printing of the first edition. I am not in agreement with this type of selling and will only state that one of our books is
a first edition if it is the first ever printing of a particular title, or if it is the first ever printing of that title
within the UK, we then state First UK Edition.
03.09.09
During the whole of September I'm now offering
a free copy of one of our collection of "Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine's" with every order we receive
directly through "Look 4 Books". If this proves to be of interest I will be carrying it on with different free offers
every month up until Christmas. So please remember to visit us again to see what publications we are giving away for free.
02.09.09
I'm
now going to be spending much more time concentrating on selling my books direct from this website. Until I get a shopping
cart facility set up remember you can still order any books you want from my online inventory and pay for it via Paypal, or by cheque. If you would like to haggle over my listed price feel free to do so. Our "John
O'London's Weekly" issues are still selling incredibly well, and I will soon be adding a page on here dedicated
to these fascinating publications. We are still adding more book covers to our slideshow on the homepage, so pop back
anytime to see if there is anything that might be of interest.
27.08.09
I hope you like the new slideshow of some of the book covers we have been
scanning over the last few weeks. We will be adding to these as quickly as our scanner can scan. If you click on any of the
books in the slideshow you can see a larger image. Feel free to use these images in anyway you wish. Remember as it states
on the homepage we never refuse any reasonable offer for any of our books so don't be afraid to haggle, we don't bite.
24.08.09
Today I've taken delivery of a small portable office building
which I'm now in the process of kitting out with bookshelves. Over the next couple of days I will be collecting a few
thousand more books so I'm in desperate need for more good quality space to store them in. Yesterday England won the Ashes
against Australia, so to all my customers from Down Under please don't hold this defeat against me personaly. Right,
must get back to work.
20.08.09
We had an awful lot of orders come
in overnight so we are now busy packing them up for delivery. No one has yet got the correct answer to the question I
put in yesterdays diary entry. Remember you can try as many times as you like. Here in the UK the big sporting story is the
final Cricket Test Match between England and Australia for The Ashes which begins this morning. I'm not going to try and
explain the rules of this game to my American customers because it would take me a week. If you fancy listening to the match
go to FIVELIVE where you will hear a totaly unique style of sports commentary.
19.08.09
A glorious day
here in Sunny Lowestoft. Very hot, so I will be doing all my work this morning, and then I'll head down to the beach where
the cooling breeze will be most welcome. Our collection of early John O'London magazines have turned out to be a
big hit with our customers, I will be collecting many more issues on the 25th of this month, so if you contacted us earlier
with an enquiry I will send out a new list to you sometime after this date. Below is a scanned image of the June 25,
1935 issue, I believe the signature on the cover is Herbert, if anyone knows this illustrators full name I would be delighted
to hear from you. In fact the first person to email with the correct answer will receive one issue of the John O'London's Weekly free of charge.

15.08.09
Overcast and dull here in Sunny Lowestoft this morning. The last few days have been pretty busy, I have been training
up my new employee, which has been fun. I think I've actually learnt more from him than he has from me. I now know all
about Twitter, and that the Arctic Monkeys are a fantastic rock band.
Bye for now
12.08.09
Pouring down with rain here this morning on the east coast of England. I've been busy building new shelving
for our ever increasing stock of books. I have taken on a new member of staff who will be attempting to make some sense
of our stock inventory, and then they will be solely in charge of all our book orders, including the postage, packing
and handling. With unemployment reaching 2.5 million in the UK it feels good to take at least one young person of this list.
Bye for now
08.08.09 I spent all day yesterday, and most of the evening loading thousands of books from a dark old rickety
barn on to my van. I got home quite late, tired and dirty, but feeling like I'd done a good days work. Today
will be spent relaxing, walking on the beach, and finished off with a few friends round for a barbacue, all washed
down with a quantity of well earned chilled beers. Have a nice weekend. Bye for now.
06.08.09
I hope you're enjoying our Youtube book films, these come courtesy of my daughter who has a much better knowledge of
these things than I do. Yesterday evening I found another fascinating title from a few boxes of general stuff I bought
on Tuesday. The Whitefriars' Chronicles published in 1900. This book gives a fascinating insight into the many famous literary
characters that were members of the Whitefriars Club in Fleet Street, London. It's still in superb condition, a really
nice find. You can see a scanned image of the cover of this book on the homepage.
It's going to be very hot and humid here in Lowestoft today, so I think I'll spend some time on the beach where it should
be slightly cooler.
Bye for now
05.08.09
I've spent the last few days buying lots more books, so I'm now working hard to get them uploaded on to Abebooks, and
scanning as many covers as I can. I suppose the find of the week so far has to be the Jane Eyre book published in 1877. I
haven't really started checking some of the other boxes of books I have, so there could be some even better finds to come,
so watch this space. Remember if you're interested in any of the titles that you see here, or in our Abebooks inventory
and you would some further information about them please don't hesitate to Contact Us.
Bye for now
31.07.09
Just had a large delivery of back issue copies of Autosport and F1 Magazines from the 1980s, 90s and early 2000s so I'm
now busy putting these into some date order and uploading them to Abebooks. This will keep me out of trouble for the next
few days. You can see a Youtube movie my daughter made using the covers of a few of these mags on the home page of Look4Books.
Bye for now
29.07.09
I'm going to tell you a very sad story. I have never sold a book from this website. I sell books on Abebooks, on Ebay,
on Amazon, at Auction, but I have not sold one solitary book from here.
Am I downhearted, am I depressed?
No I'm not. One day someone will take the plunge and click on my paypal logo and buy the book of their dreams from www.look4books.co.uk and all will be well in my world.
Bye for now
28.07.09
I've been doing some house clearances over the past couple of days so haven't had much time to update this site, I'm
free today so I'll be adding some extra content later.
I have only been selling on Abebooks for a few weeks and sales have been very good, but one thing that has taken me completely
by surprise is the amout of orders we have received from other so called book dealers. So far these orders account for about
40% of our sales. So buyers beware there are an awful lot of dealers listing books on Abe that they do not have. They list
many thousands of titles but in reality hold no stock. They wait for an order from a customer and then buy the book from one
of the real book sellers and get them to send it to their customer. Some of these cheeky operators even ask for a discount
on the books they buy from me.
If you use Abebooks to buy from you might want to consider seeking out book sellers who don't list vast quantities of
books, and look for books that have a unique description instead of some computer generated bland statement of condition.
You can view my latest additions to Abebooks HERE
Bye for now
24.07.09
Had a great day at the Air Show yesterday, but back to work today. I've bribed my daughter into helping me pack
my sales orders up this morning, I'm going to be stacking my wholesale books on to pallets and wrapping them in yards of cling
film. I've had the same six customers for my 300 books on a pallet for £100 business for the last 15 years. I have no idea
how much they make from each deal, and frankly I don't care. None of my business. Any dealers reading this take note, I'M
NOT TAKING ON ANY MORE CUSTOMERS.
I found an old crate full of 1940s and 50s and 60s Vogue magazines, would hazard a guess at around 300 issues,
all in incredibly good condition. Haven't quite worked out what to do with these yet, might not be the kind of item that sells
on Abebooks, so I'll hang on to them for a while before making a decision.
Right, time for work.
Bye for now
23.07.09
Today is the start of the annual Air Show in my home town of Lowestoft. We receive over 200,000 visitors to the town
over the two days. Most of the locals batten down the hatches until it's all over, but I love it. So know work for me
today, it's off down the beach for a big family party. I open part of my yard up for parking for the visitors at £10.00 a
day so not only do I have great time, but I'm also earning a crust.
To all the grumpy old men that live in the Abebooks Book Sellers Forum, SMILE.
Bye for now.
22.07.09
Had some good news this morning from Abebooks where I have only recently begun listing some of my books. They have been
kind enough to feature one of my books on the front page of their rare book section. I'd like to take this opportunity to
thank everyone at Abebooks, especially the young lady who showed a great deal of patience in helping this old fool through some
of the difficulties I was having in building my inventory. You can take a look at my featured book "The Romance of the League"
by clicking HERE
Bye for now
21.07.09
Pouring with rain again here in Sunny Lowestoft. I'm now on so many painkillers I can't feel my fingers tapping the keys
while I'm writing this. I have a 20 foot container full of books arriving at midday, these books will stay where
they are until I feel well enough to unload them. Because I'm such a miserable old sod at the moment I will keep out of the
way of the rest of the family today, so it's scanning book covers for me in the privacy of my little office.
Bye for now
20.07.09
I'm still feeling bloody awful after my operation. I only had a Septoplasty (straightening my nasal passage), and a procedure
to remove a large chunk of my palate. Still can't swallow properly, and breathing is a real effort. Fingers crossed I should
see some improvement by the end of the week. My wife's a nurse so she's showing me no sympathy whatsoever. She thinks
I should take the pain like a man and stop being such a wimp. She's probably right.
I have 15 books that sold over the weekend that I have to pack up and take to the Post Office this morning.
Every time I check my email another book has sold, I should be happy, but feeling like I am I could do with a day or two without
any more orders. As soon as I come back from the Post Office I'm going to continue to upload some photographs of the books
I have for sale on Abebooks. It's boring but takes very little effort. Perfect. Below is a dust jacket cover from the novel
Mary Wakefield by Mazo De La Roche illustrated by the wonderful Biro

17.07.09
Pouring down with rain here this morning in Sunny Lowestoft. I'm still not feeling too great after
my operation so I'm trying to take it easy for the next few days. Still looking for someone with a good knowledge of internet
based selling, who also has good IT skills that would like to go into partnership with me to turn this website into
a dynamic online book shop.
Bye for now.
11.07.09
Today I'm packing up all my orders so they can be sent out nice and early on Monday morning. I'm going
into hospital Monday afternoon for an operation so my wife will be taking over the helm for a few days. Should be back and
raring to go by about Friday of next week. Just had a phone call from a house clearance friend of mine who wants to drop round
"two ton" of books to me on that Friday so I think I better be well by then. I love the way house clearance guys see books
in terms of weight, dumping them costs money so they would rather give them to me. Hope you all have a nice weekend.
Bye for now
10.07.09
I spent most of yesterday uploading some new stock on to Abebooks. Today I'm scanning about 100 book
covers to add to my listings. The life of a book dealer can be incredibly tedious. I think I'll pack up for the day at about
4pm and take a long walk along the beach in front of my house.
Below is a snap I took of my beach a few days ago.

08.07.09
Yesterdays trip to pick up a large collection of Film and Sporting books did not go as well as I'd hoped.
These books had been stored in a very damp farmers barn for almost 50 years and to put it mildly, or should that be
mouldy, they were past their sell by date. Sadly
there comes a time when the condition of a book is so bad that the best course of action is to throw them in a recycling bin
so they might be turned once more into new books.
Bye for now
07.07.09
Today I will hopefully be picking up a very large collection of old sports and entertainment books and magazines.
I haven't seen these yet so it could be a bit of a dissapointment, or looking on the more positive side it could be a
little treasure trove. So fingers crossed.
I'll let you know how I got on tomorrow.
Bye for now
06.07.09
I picked us some wonderful old Film and Filming magazines on Sunday at a very nearly rained off boot sale.
I have a feeling I got these pretty cheap because the seller thought the rain was in for the day and he would go home without
a penny earned. Tomorrow I'm picking up a large collection of other film and boxing related books and magazines from the 1950s
and 60s so they should keep me busy for a while.
Abebooks decided in their wisdom to remove most of my books from their site because I'd put a link to this
site on my listings. This was a mistake on my part, but what I can't understand is why these big companies don't just send
you an email explaining your error before taking such draconian action. Hopefully my books will be back online very soon.
Bye for now.
02.07.09
Today I'm getting down to the incredibly boring task of updating my book inventory. Anything that hasn't
sold in the past six months will either be put into a general auction, or I will drop the price by 50% on Abebooks. This is
something I've done every year since I began selling books. There are a number of reasons for doing this, one of the main
ones is a lack of storage space. At the moment in my library I can keep around 8000 books in good order, any more than this
and it can become a little chaotic. So sadly there comes a time when a clear out is the only way to stay afloat, the
thought of drowning under a sea of Catherine Cookson paperbacks isn't something I would like to experience.
30.06.09
I spent most of yesterday at an auction in Suffolk. It was very hot and sweaty, but I was able to win most
of the books I wanted. When I returned home I was amazed to find inside one of the titles I'd bought an old compliment
slip from Max Reinhardt and The Bodley Head With Compliments at the Request of Mr. Charles Chaplin. I do love these wonderful
pieces of ephemera that turn up in the most unlikely places in bulk auction lots. I will be spending the rest of today adding
some of my new finds to my Abebooks Inventory.
26.06.09
I'm now considering listing my books for sale on this website, as I'm an IT idiot I could do with some help
from somebody who isn't an IT idiot. So if there is anyone out there who would be interested in joining forces with me to
help build a full checkout based book shop I would love to hear from them. You can contact me at postmaster@look4books.co.uk
23.06.09
I've been travelling around the country buying new stock, and visiting some of my regular customers. I'm
now back home for a while and will be concentrating most of my time on uploading books on to Abe. Picked up a nice signed
copy of The Collected Letters of a Nobody by Keith Waterhouse. I've had many signed books in my time but this is the first
I can ever remember by Waterhouse.
Well I better get back to work.
19.06.09
After updating my Abebooks inventory I went to an auction viewing which turned out to be a complete
waste of time. Nothing of interest and even their tea was stewed. Found an interesting book at a house clearance, probably
not of any great value but you never know. It's quite nicely bound in full leather which has obviously been
done privately, and I'm presuming the pages which are dated from 1861-2 are either single sheets from the old telegraph system,
or some periodical because they all relate to daily prices of commodoties during those years. I will have to dig a bit deeper
before trying to sell it.
First Entry
18.06.09
Yesterday I received a phone call from a customer wanting to sell me his books. I advertise in
the local newspapers "Books Wanted."
The conversation went something like this.
Me ."Good morning, how can I help."
Customer. "Do you buy books?"
Me. "Yes I do."
Customer. "What kind of books do you buy?"
Me. "Best if I tell you what books I don't buy. I don't buy Readers Digest books, or book club
books, or encyclopedias."
Silence
Me again. "What books do you have?"
Customer. "I've got loads."
Me. "Great. Are they fiction or non fiction?"
Customer. "What's non fiction?"
Me Biting lip. "Books about things that have really happened, or instructional type books."
Customer. "I've got "Jaws, you know the one from the film."
Me. "That's very good, but "Jaws" is fiction. I do buy fiction, have you got a lot of fiction
books compared to non fiction?"
Customer. "What's fiction?"
